Allocation Information
Requesting Allocations
Note
Your use of Radiant may qualify for funding via Illinois Computes. To apply, log in to the NCSA XRAS portal and select Start a New Illinois Computes Program Submission.
Request resources on Radiant through NCSA’s Extensible Resource Allocation System (XRAS) portal. Access to the portal requires an NCSA identity; create an NCSA identity if you don’t already have one.
As a principal investigator (PI) or project owner on Radiant, information about your billing account will be required to set up your project. You will be billed monthly for your allocation. Internal users will be asked to provide a University account number (CFOPA). External users should contact Jim Glasgow before submitting a resource request.
For proposal inclusion questions, please reach out to Janessa Gentry.
Submission Process
After logging into the XRAS portal, you will see a list of available submission opportunities. To begin a new request for Radiant:
Click the Start a New Radiant Submission button in the Radiant opportunity box.
Fill out the form, providing as much detail as possible.
Click the Submit button at the bottom of the form.
Once submitted, your request will be reviewed, and you will be notified when the request is either approved or denied. New project requests are reviewed weekly and are generally approved or denied within one week of submission. Someone from the review panel may reach out to you for additional information/clarification. This can lengthen the time it takes to review your request, so you are encouraged to provide as much detail as possible in the form.
You can view your allocation request and its status in the XRAS portal.
If you have questions about the submission process, please submit a support request.
What Happens When Your Request is Approved
The project PI will be notified by email when a request is approved. Projects will normally be active within one working day of request approval.
Initially, only the project PI will have access to the project. PIs can add additional staff to projects by adding them directly or inviting them to a project using the Group Management Tool. Refer to Group Management for detailed instructions.
For technical and on-boarding questions, please reach out to Jim Glasgow.
Accessing Radiant
Access Radiant through the Radiant OpenStack Horizon dashboard. Refer to Creating New Instances for information on creating and managing instances.
Project Life Cycle
Allocated projects that have been granted resources on Radiant may use those resources, in accordance with the Radiant terms of use, for the period of their allocation. Allocation duration is typically 12 months and does not automatically renew. Request allocation renewal in the XRAS portal up to 90 days before the end of the allocation.
Allocations that are not renewed have a 5 day grace period after the allocation end date to close out work, after which all running instances are terminated. All project data is removed from the system 30 days after the end of a project allocation.
If a project wants to continue storing data but no longer requires Radiant compute resources, the project may request to have NCSA transition the Radiant data to other NCSA storage resources.
